I'm sorry about the OT designation.This thread does belong with `(Theaters in US still using VOTT's) were multiplexing was discussed. I'll try to make amends with this topic.

I was on a different speaker forum the other day. The main thread was on VOTT and it was still going strong after 2 years. They compared 3 main HF drivers from Altec 288 , JBL and TAD with a radial horn. Their conclusions are interresting . The altec 288 8b had the best natural sound. The JBL 2445J was good but the titanium diaphragm gave it a bit of harhsness. The Tad TD4001 was to analytical and voices were to artificial.

Comparison Engine: ALTEC 288C vs JBL 2445J vs TAD TD4001

Hello,
A visit to Raoul (Rliyung) and Alain (Audiotechno) in Dominica was the opportunity of listening compared these three engines:
- ALTEC 288B Aluminum diaphragm with 2 "adapter
- JBL 2445J Titanium diaphragm
- TAD TD4001 Beryllium diaphragm

For this exercise:
- Using the same pavilion: in the TAD TH 4001 version Replica.
- 3-way system: VOT / Altec 515-8G, JBL 2405H and filter series / parallel (zeta = 1, Fc = 640 Hz, 9000 Hz = Bc1). The three engines are 16 ohm and even equalization level.
- 300B SE Amp AN.
- Musical Excerpts: Michel Jonaz "time past" and Shirley Horn "Beautiful Love" (CD1 M?laudia)

My first impression: 3 engines and 3 different plays.
- ALTEC 288B: natural, soft voice, very nice and very good tonal balance with other HP merger.
- JBL 2445J: voice slightly "ess?es" high and the medium rather "noisy", however, agrees very well with other HP. Contributes to a great dynamic together.
- TAD TD4001: midrange despite a very rich and very (too?) Analytical voices seem a little artificial, suddenly merging with other HP was seen as fairly average (maybe a pb phasing or equalization). Still an excellent overall dynamics.
